Naming your chickens is one of the unexpected joys of keeping a flock. And while it might seem silly to give them all names, there is a practical reason too. It means when we’re discussing the flock, we each know which chicken we’re referring to.

So, rather than saying ‘the skittish black one with a shorter tail who always hangs around with the oldest ginger one’, we can just use their names instead!

From pun-filled picks to nature-inspired gems, we’ve rounded up over 300 chicken names to suit every bird and every sense of humor. Whether you’re naming one hen or a whole themed flock, you’re sure to find inspiration for the perfect name for your feathered friends here.

To get us started, I thought I’d share the names of our current flock (and yes, we know they’re ridiculous!):

Now, for our final and my favorite category – themed chicken names! You may have noticed that a lot of our own hens have themed names, and with good reason. Naming chicks hatched together with themed names is a great way for us to keep track of who is related to who, and how old each group of hens is.
